Aprilia backs outgoing Sam Lowes to ‘express his talent’

Aprilia has backed Sam Lowes to “express his talent” in motorcycle racing despite opting not to retain the Briton's services for 2018.

Aprilia signed Lowes on a three-year contract for 2016, 2017 and 2018, in which he spent the first season competing in Moto2 before graduating to the premier class this season.

However, Lowes has finished in the points just once, courtesy of placing 14th at the French Grand Prix, prompting speculation that he would be replaced for 2018.

Lowes’ manager confirmed last week that such a development had taken place and Aprilia announced on Monday that it has recruited Scott Redding to partner Aleix Espargaró next season.

Aprilia chief Romano Albesiano expects Lowes to be able to display his ability, but revealed that replacing Lowes with Redding is the right move for the future.

“We bid Sam farewell, certainly thanking him for his commitment and efforts during this, his rookie season in MotoGP, and for the contribution he has made to the team's growth,” said Albesiano.

“He is a rider who will doubtless be able to express his talent, but right now we must make choices that allow us to fulfil our commitments to the Piaggio Group and our fans.

“We will continue to work together with the efforts we have always made so that he can have a good season finale and we wish Sam all the best for his career in the future.”

Aprilia’s confirmation of its 2018 rider line-up leaves vacancies only at Marc VDS, Aspar and Avintia, though LCR Honda has been tipped to add a second bike.

Confirmed 2018 MotoGP rider line-up:

Repsol Honda: Marc Márquez / Dani Pedrosa
Yamaha: Valentino Rossi / Maverick Viñales
Ducati: Jorge Lorenzo / Andrea Dovizioso
Suzuki: Andrea Iannone / Álex Rins
Aprilia: Aleix Espargaró / Scott Redding
KTM: Pol Espargaró / Bradley Smith
Tech 3: Johann Zarco / Jonas Folger
Pramac: Danilo Petrucci / Jack Miller
LCR Honda: Cal Crutchlow / TBD
Aspar: Álvaro Bautista / TBC
