Lance Stroll encouraged by progress in rookie F1 campaign

Lance Stroll says he is upbeat over the progress he has made during the first half of his rookie season with Williams.

Stroll graduated to Formula 1 as the second-youngest driver in history, off the back of a title-winning campaign in European Formula 3 last year.

Stroll endured a tough opening sequence of races, amid Q1 dropouts and retirements, but claimed his first points courtesy of ninth position at his home race in Canada, before capturing a shock podium in Azerbaijan.

Stroll also added another point to his tally in Austria, meaning he holds 12th position in the championship, one spot and five points behind team-mate Felipe Massa.

“I think there’s always things to work on, especially where I am now, being my first season,” Stroll said.

“The learning never stops, every time I get in the car there’s something to work on, but I’m pretty happy with the way it’s been going lately.

“We had our tough moments, which was expected in a first season, you have to expect adversity, you’ve got to get over it.

“We had some great moments, scoring points, the podium in Baku was great, we scored a good amount of points the first part of the season.

“So far, so good, but there’s still a long way to go and we have to take it race-by-race and take it one point at a time.”

Stroll also added that Williams has to try and “cure” its weaknesses at certain venues, with the FW40’s performance having been inconsistent for much of the season.

“Our strength is on faster tracks with more straights so we can use our car to our advantage,” he said.

“On short tracks like Monaco, Austria we really struggle a bit more, we can’t hide that, but moving forwards we need to try and cure those issues.”
