Romain Grosjean says Renault return would be ‘lovely’

Romain Grosjean says he wouldn't rule out a return to the Renault F1 team in the future, but says it would only be of interest if he were able to fight for the championship.

The Frenchman made his Formula 1 debut with the French outfit in 2009 when he replaced Nelson Piquet Jr mid-season. Grosjean was then dropped at the end of that year and took two years out before returning in 2012 with the Lotus team, where he claimed ten podium finishes during his four-year stint.

Grosjean then joined Haas during their debut season last year and claimed all 29 of their points, and whilst he has a contract until 2019, he says returning to Renault, a French-owned team, would be "lovely", but it's not something he has given much thought.

"No, I haven’t talked with Renault," he told the official Formula 1 website. "Going back to Renault one day would be lovely, but it should be the time when we really could be world champions together. That would be a superb situation, but right now it is a bit premature."

Grosjean says his end goal is to win a world chamionship and knows it won't happen with Haas, therefore understands he will need to move teams eventually, but says his current focus is on building up the American outfit.

"I want to be world champion – that is why I am racing. And that is why I’m getting frustrated. If I cannot fight high enough at the front I get frustrated, because I love winning."

"Life can be full of surprises. Take Valtteri [Bottas] and how his fate changed from the 1st to the 7th of December last year. Things like that do happen.

"Right now I am part of a great project. I am very proud of what we have done together – and we want to become better, of course."
