Techeetah driver Jean-Eric Vergne took victory in the 2016/2017 Formula E finale in Montreal, with seventh being enough for Lucas di Grassi to take the drivers’ title.

Vergne jumped ahead of Sam Bird at the start to claim second place, holding position and going one lap longer in the pitstop phase.

With more useable energy and strong pace, he quickly closed in on leader Felix Rosenqvist, making the move on lap 29 with a late lunge at Turn 3.

From there, he stormed ahead, only for Rosenqvist to cut the gap back in the final laps. However, Vergne did enough to hold him off to score his first Formula E victory.

Further back, di Grassi headed into the race 18 points clear of his rival Sebastien Buemi. But, with the Renault e.dams not scoring, seventh was good enough for di Grassi to secure the championship.

He started fifth on the grid, only to lose a spot on lap one and fall several places in the car swaps, before making up ground in the second half of the race.

On the last lap, he slowed slightly to allow team-mate Daniel Abt through for sixth. They finished behind Rosenqvist in second, Jose Maria Lopez, Sam Bird and Nick Heidfeld.

It was a dramatic but disappointing final race for Buemi, who started 13th and suffered rear damage at the first corner after contact with Antonio Felix da Costa.

A rear tyre cover was flapping on his car and he got the black and orange flag, but managed to remove it. His team did not seem to realise and called him into the pits, dropping him to last.

From there, it was an uphill battle, but Buemi came through to finish 11th. Despite six wins and early domination, he missed out on a second championship.

Stephane Sarrazin came through from the back after a lap one spin to finish eighth, behind di Grassi, with Jerome d’Ambrosio and Tom Dillmann completing the top 10.
