Antonio Giovinazzi hopes FP1 crash can be explained

Antonio Giovinazzi is hopeful that his crash during the first practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix can be explained, believing he lost the car “too easily” at the Hungaroring.

Giovinazzi, participating in his second of seven planned FP1 runs with Haas, snapped sideways on the turn-in for the right-hander at Turn 11, and spun into the barriers.

The impact caused substantial damage to the front-left of Giovinazzi’s Haas VF-17, ruling him out of the remainder of the session.

On the cause of the crash, Giovinazzi said: “We still don’t know to be honest, I had a few laps and to be honest the lap time was already quite good.

“Then I just lost the car with an aggressive step oversteer on entry, so I think we had a problem but we still don’t know, we’re checking the data, I hope we can find it soon.

“For sure, I felt something from my side, because I lost the car too easily, I had a big snap on the entry. But we need to check.”

Giovinazzi was left to rue the lost track time, having completed only eight laps during his truncated session.

“I lost also 50 mins of FP1, already [I have] not enough time in the car this year, so to do FP1 is important for me,” he said.

“I’m disappointed for me and for Kevin [Magnussen]; I hope the car can be ready for him and [the team can] find the problem of what happened.”
