Daniel Ricciardo awarded Driver of the Day for British GP

Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo has won the Driver of the Day award for the British Grand Prix after his drive from the back row to fifth.

Problems in the first segment of qualifying saw him finish the session 20th, but despite gearbox and engine component change penalties, he started the race 19th.

That was due to Fernando Alonso’s huge 30-place grid penalty for power unit component changes, elevating him one position.

However, that did not stop Ricciardo from a charging recovery drive to fifth place, despite a few setbacks along the way.

The Australian bounced back by gradually moving up the field and benefitted from the late drama, with Sebastian Vettel falling to seventh with a puncture, to claim fifth.

After some brilliant battles and a feisty performance, he finished a few seconds behind his team-mate Max Verstappen and was voted Driver of the Day by the fans.

F1 supporters can vote for Driver of the Day from the mid-way point of the race and Ricciardo received the most.

It is his first time winning the award this year, here’s a look at who has won at each race so far in 2017:

Australia – Vettel
China – Verstappen
Bahrain – Vettel
Russia – Bottas
Spain – Vettel
Monaco – Vettel
Canada – Vettel
Azerbaijan – Stroll
Austria – Bottas
Britain – Ricciardo
