Lewis Hamilton will keep his 67th career pole position – now one shy of the all-time record set by Michael Schumacher – after the British Grand Prix stewards deemed he did not impede Romain Grosjean during qualifying.
Grosjean complained that he had lost time behind the Briton when the two met at the Club corner, with Hamilton preparing for his second Q3 flying lap on his first run, while Grosjean was on a quick lap behind.
The stewards said the matter would be investigated after the session, leaving Hamilton's pole provisional; shortly after, the stewards deemed Grosjean had not been "impeded" by the Mercedes driver and chose to take no further action.
"While Grosjean potentially may have been affected by presence of Hamilton, he was not impeded," confirmed the stewards.
Grosjean felt he lost at least one position because of the incident.
"My first run in Q3 was really good, I got completely blocked by Hamilton in the last corner and lost a good three tenths," said the Frenchman.
"[It cost] at least one position, I would have had [Stoffel] Vandoorne at least. I'm very unhappy with my first attempt being completely ruined at the last corner."
