Porsche led the way during opening practice for the Nurburgring round of the World Endurance Championship as it applied the new high-downforce aero configuration to its car.

Timo Bernhard turned in a time of 1:41.612s behind the wheel of the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid, which sports a different front profile to the one that competed in the opening three events of 2017.

Bernhard's time, set near the end of the 90-minute run, pipped the second-placed Toyota TS050 of Sebastien Buemi by 0.204 seconds.

The sister Porsche completed the top three, ahead of the #7 Toyota, as the four LMP1 entries fell under a 0.367 second blanket.

The session was brought to a premature halt with four minutes remaining when the #31 Rebellion LMP2 of Julien Canal and the #77 Proton Competition Porsche of Marvin Dienst collided into the Turn 5 gravel.

Both cars led the way in their respective classes, with Bruno Senna's time of 1:47.717s topping LMP2 by six tenths from the G-Drive Racing ORECA, and Matteo Cairoli leading GTE-Am.

Ferrari led Porsche in GTE-Pro, with the 488 Italia of Davide Rigon lapping fastest on a 1:57.170.

Rigon's time was marginally quicker than Michael Christensen in the #92 Porsche 911 RSR, who in turn edged out the second Ferrari.

The pair of Aston Martin Vantages ran at the foot of the class despite receiving a 20kg weight break from the new 'automatic' Balance of Performance system, which takes into account data from the last six-hour race at Spa.

A second 90-minute free practice session is bookmarked for 16:15 local time (15:15 UK), ahead of qualifying on Saturday afternoon.
