Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are both looking ahead to the next race where they're wishing for better luck after both exited the Austrian Grand Prix at the opening corner on the opening lap, having been involved in a Turn 1 incident caused by Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat.
Kvyat carried too much speed into Turn 1 and hit the rear of Alonso's McLaren, spinning the Spaniard into Verstappen's Red Bull, forcing both to retire with race-ending damage.
Verstappen explained that a start procedure failure led to him falling back into the midfield, which is why he found himself caught up in the incident, before a total clutch failure as a result of the contact ended his race.
"I already felt in the formation lap it [the start] was not fantastic, and then in the actual start I got a failure, so I got anti-stall," explained the Dutchman.
"I tried to stay out of trouble, to go wide in Turn 1, and then I got hit on the rear tyre, and because of that the clutch over-engaged and basically broke the bearing in the clutch, so I had no drive anymore."
Verstappen apologised to the massive contingent of Dutch fans that were present at the race, bedecked in the country's national colour of orange.
"Of course I'm very disappointed also for the fans," he added. "I think it's the best crowd I've seen so far, but I couldn't even do a start or one corner for them, so I don't know what to say really.
"I've had a lot of bad luck lately and we will try and do better again at Silverstone," he said, referring to his fifth retirement in six races.
Alonso, who was caught up in the collision, is also hoping for better luck at McLaren's home race next weekend.
"We did a good start, could benefit from Verstappen and [Carlos] Sainz's bad start.
"We were already P10 at the first corner, but people behind arrived too fast and hit us, and unfortunately we are talking to you [the media], not in the car, but hopefully more luck next time."
