Jimmie Johnson takes Cup win in chaotic Dover race

Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson went from last to first in a chaotic NASCAR Cup race at Dover to claim his third victory of the 2017 season.

The race went into overtime after a late caution for David Ragan’s crash with four laps to go, after a tyre failure.

Kyle Larson led the field ahead of Johnson, who had a stronger restart and took over the lead on the final lap.

They just crossed the overtime line under green flags before a considerable crash caused the race to finish while under caution.

It was sparked by Ty Dillon, running fourth, spinning on dust from the clear-up of Ragan’s car – which suffered a small fire – and being collected by the pack.

Johnson won the extended 406-lap race after being sent to the back of the grid for a pre-race gear change, but steadily moved up the order and found himself fifth after the first two stages.

Staying out while his rivals pitted under green flag conditions late on brought him into contention with a caution and he got the jump on Larson in overtime.

Larson finished second, just like at last year’s Dover event, with Martin Truex Jr – who won the first two stages – pitting very late to claim third.

Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott and rookie Daniel Suarez were next up. Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick emerged from the last-lap chaos to complete the top 10.

Kyle Busch started on pole but finished 16th after losing time with loose tyres on two separate occasions, while many drivers suffered tyre failures – Ricky Stenhouse Jr was hit by two flat tyres in the space of eight laps.

Front-runners Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski were eliminated in the first stage after colliding, with Busch continuing, only for a tyre failure to cause him to crash out.
