Tech Bite: Sauber’s Monaco tech tweaks

Sauber’s development push has continued in recent races as the Hinwil outfit aim to make up their power losses (remember that they are using a 2016 Ferrari power unit) through aerodynamic updates. A new rear-wing was installed in Barcelona and a front-wing was also trialled but not raced, but the bulk of the new package came in Monaco.

Alongside some subtle flick-up devices along the flanks of the car the C36 now sports a set of Mercedes-style sidepod baffles, utilising three overlapping vanes to manage the front tyre wake and protect flow passing over the sculpted bodwork surrounding the car’s internals.

The design team have drawn inspiration from many cars up and down the grid, replicating solutions at both the front and rear-ends. Following in Williams’ steps and maximising the box region left open in the regulations, a lower hooped T-wing, mounted to the rear-wing support, peaks from behind the sidepods. The new device will work in conjunction with the revised rear-wing introduced in Spain to extract a little more rear downforce.
