Jenson Button will return to competitive motorsport action after signing to race for Team Mugen in Super GT at the Suzuka 1000km in August.

Button will drive a Honda NSX-GT at the home of the Japanese Grand Prix, alongside Hideki Mutoh and Daisuke Nakajima, for the endurance event on August 27.

The Briton will participate in two days of tyre testing in the car at the venue next Tuesday and Wednesday, as part of preparations for his debut.

"After driving an NSX Concept-GT at Honda Racing's 'Thanks Day' last December, I became interested in racing in Super GT," he said.

"I spoke with Honda and they have given me the chance to race at the Suzuka 1000km.

"As an F1 driver and a member of Team Mugen, I will push to win. I am very much looking forward to racing in front of my Japanese fans again."

Button retired from Formula 1 at the end of 2016 but made a one-off appearance in Monaco, competing in place of Indianapolis-bound Fernando Alonso.

Button qualified in ninth position but started from the pit lane due to engine penalties, and retired after colliding with Pascal Wehrlein at Portier.
