Carlos Sainz Jr. has been given a three-place grid penalty for colliding with Lance Stroll during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was also awarded two penalty points on his license for the incident, bringing his 12-month total up to seven.

Sainz emerged from the pitlane and went up the inside of Stroll into Turn 1, but the Williams took to the apex and the two cars clashed.

It put both drivers out of the race on the spot and the safety car was deployed as a result.

The stewards investigated the collision after the race and deemed Sainz was at fault for the contact.

A statement from the stewards said:

“The stewards heard from Carlos Sainz, the driver of car No.55, Lance Stroll, the driver of car No.18 and the team representatives, reviewed the video evidence which showed that car No.18 was on the normal racing line, car No. 55 left the pit lane and made a very optimistic attempt to pass car No.18 into the corner.

“The stewards decided that the driver of car No.55 was predominately to blame for causing the collision in violation of Article 27.4 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

He will drop three places on the grid for the next event, the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi.
