The format for the World Endurance Championship GTE categories will be altered in 2018, according to several key members of the organising committee.

During a press conference ahead of the season-opening 6 Hours of Silverstone, FIA President Jean Todt said there would be a push to give GTE "even more visibility" in the coming years.

Head of the FIA Endurance Commission Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones added that this would involve a change in format to enhance the status of the category, which recently gained recognition as a licenced world championship for the upcoming season.

"We are working on a format with some creative ideas on how to give the GT cars more visibility within the race wekeends to make that very attractive for the fans," said Owen-Jones.

"It's too early to say exactly what we are going to do but we should be able to come back with some news fairly soon."

"We would expect to see some evolution of the format itself by the beginning of next year."

The GTE-Pro category is currently entered by Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin and Porsche, with BMW set to join in 2018.

GTE-Am, meanwhile, has attracted only five entries for 2017 and could be exposed to the upcoming wave of changes.

The announcement was made after Todt, Owen-Jones and ACO President Pierre Fillon signed a contract extension for the WEC lasting through to 2020.
