Renault driver Nico Hülkenberg picked up four penalty points during the course of Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix.

The German racer was penalised for passing under the virtual safety car and the following safety car phase, caused by incidents for Lance Stroll and Antonio Giovinazzi respectively.

Hülkenberg was also given five and 10-second time penalties for the incidents; he was deemed to have overtaken Haas' Romain Grosjean during the VSC and Sauber's Marcus Ericsson behind the safety car.

Hülkenberg started from an encouraging seventh, securing Renault's first Q3 slot since it operated as Lotus in 2015, but his race quickly unravelled and he ended up finishing in 12th place.

With his penalty points from China, Hülkenberg’s 12-month tally moves up to six, although two of those will be removed from his license next week.

Force India's Sergio Pérez and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo were also punished as they both failed to attend the national anthem at the required time on the grid.

They were each given a reprimand; it is Pérez’s second reprimand of the current 2017 F1 season and Ricciardo’s first.

Drivers will receive a 10-place grid penalty for the current or next event if they collect three reprimands during the course of a season.
