Lewis Hamilton dominates Chinese GP to draw level on points with Sebastian Vettel

Lewis Hamilton sailed to his first win of the 2017 season as he dominated a thrilling Chinese Grand Prix for Mercedes, finishing ahead of Melbourne winner Sebastian Vettel to tie on points in the championship.

The victory is the Briton's fifth win at the Shanghai venue, adding to his wins in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015.

Vettel was a distant second, eight seconds back, though the Ferrari driver had to work his way through the field –making some impressive overtakes in the process – after making an early stop which dropped him down the order in the opening laps.

Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, despite starting the race way down in 16th after making up nine places on the opening lap. He narrowly beat team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, fourth, less than a second adrift.

Fifth went to Kimi Raikkonen ahead of Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen for Haas. Force India's Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10.

The race started in damp but drying conditions, prompting talks of slick tyres for the start. However it was only Toro Rosso's Sainz who was brave enough as the other 19 cars started on the intermediate tyres.

It didn't work out well for the Spaniard as he quickly dropped down the order as he lacked grip at the race start, before a spin shortly after dropped him to 19th, with only Renault's Jolyon Palmer behind, after the Briton chose to pit at the end of the formation lap.

Meanwhile Red Bull's Verstappen surged from 16th to seventh on the opening lap, before making up further places.

The first retiree was Williams' Lance Stroll; the rookie driver ended up in the gravel after Sergio Perez made contact with the rear of the FW40 at Turn 9, in what was deemed a racing incident by the stewards.

That brought out the Virtual Safety Car (VSC), leading to a flurry of stops up and down the grid. The most notable being Vettel from second place, whilst race leader Hamilton chose to remain out.

As soon as the VSC ended, a full-blown Safety Car was called on Lap 4 as Sauber stand-in Antonio Giovinazzi suffered a heavy crash on the start/finish straight after hitting a patch of water, pitching him into the barrier at speed.

That gave the leaders, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas the perfect opportunity to get rid of their intermediate tyres and stop for new softs.

Valtteri Bottas spun during the SC period as he attempted to get some warmth in his cold slicks, dropping him from fifth to P12, forcing him to fight his way back through the field for the remainder of the race to eventually finish sixth.

Verstappen continued his march, passing Raikkonen to take third before then passing team-mate Ricciardo to slot into second position, meanwhile Vettel forced his way past Raikkonen and Ricciardo, the latter via a brilliant wheel-banging move, a few laps later to chase down the Dutch youngster.

A rare mistake from Verstappen allowed Vettel past at the hairpin to take second place where he would go on to finish despite a second round of stops for all frontrunners.

Verstappen was chased to the finish by team-mate Ricciardo, who attempted a move on the final lap, but their positions were maintained.

A number of cars retired including Stroll and Giovinazzi. McLaren suffered a double DNF with Stoffel Vandoorne dropping out with a fuel issue, whilst Fernando Alonso stopped whilst running eighth.

Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat also pulled off the circuit with an unspecified problem.
