Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport driver Daniel Abt secured his second career pole position in Formula E after topping qualifying for the Mexico City ePrix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Abt clocked a time of 1:02.711 during the Super Pole session to wind up fastest, 0.156s clear of NextEV NIO rival Oliver Turvey, with DS Virgin’s José María Lopez third.

Abt's lap also ensured he became the fourth different pole sitter across the opening four rounds of the season.

"I’m really really happy, there were one or two mistakes so I’m a bit surprised, but super happy for the team," said Abt.

Venturi’s Maro Engel was fourth quickest but was hit with a 10-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Jean-Éric Vergne will start from fourth for Techeetah, ahead of Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld, Virgin’s Sam Bird and Andretti’s António Félix da Costa.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio will line-up from eighth position, with championship leader Sébastien Buemi only ninth, following his overnight trip from the WEC prologue at Monza.

Practice pacesetter Buemi, unbeaten so far in the 2016/17 season, was assigned to the first qualifying group but struggled for grip on the dirty track surface, while primary title rival Lucas di Grassi encountered similar strife and will start from 17th spot.

Marrakesh pole sitter Felix Rosenqvist was unable to repeat his heroics from earlier in the season and will start from 10th, ahead of debutant Esteban Gutiérrez.

Gutiérrez, following his exit from Formula 1, has linked up with Techeetah and qualified 13th, but moves up two positions following the penalties for Engel and team-mate Stéphane Sarrazin.

Loic Duval will start from the back of the grid after crashing during Q3.
