It has been reported that former Formula One driver JJ Lehto (Jyrki Juhani Järvilehto) was involved in a boating accident on Friday morning, with the Finn suffering from broken ribs and head injuries.
Lehto, who drove for Onyx, Scuderia Italia, Sauber and Benetton between 1989 and 1994, collided with a bridge support in Tammisare on Finland’s Southern Coast.
He had been accompanied by a passenger at the time, who sadly passed away in the incident. Lehto though, managed to swim ashore to find help where locals then identified him.
It’s thought the pair were travelling at speeds in excess of 40 knots, well over the local speed limit for the area of water, however these reports are yet to be confirmed.
Lehto returned to F1 in 2001 as a commentator for Finland’s MTV3 channel.
