Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has confirmed that Sage Karam will once again drive its single-car entry for the Indianapolis 500 in 2017.

Karam, 21, won the Indy Lights title back in 2013 before making his first Indy 500 appearance with Dreyer & Reinbold the following year.

Karam featured for Chip Ganassi Racing at all but four races in 2015, but lost his seat to Max Chilton for 2016. A one-off appearance for Dreyer & Reinbold followed at the 500, with Karam rising as high as fourth before contact sent him out of the race on lap 92.

The American turned his attention to sportscar racing, securing a drive with Lexus’ new programme in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with his first start coming at the Rolex 24 last weekend.

Karam will balance his Lexus commitments with a fourth entry to the Indianapolis 500, with his return confirmed on Thursday.

“I’m really excited to be back with Dennis [Reinbold] and the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team for the Indianapolis 500 this May,” Karam said.

“Trying to win the 500 as a one-off team is certainly a big challenge, but I’m confident in this team and their ability to field a race car that can win this race.

“I’ll be working with the same engineers and the same pit crew from the last two races at Indy with DRR and I trust that we can build upon that continuity and ride that momentum to the double checkers and into Victory Lane.”
