Casey Stoner headed up a Ducati 1-2 on the first day of MotoGP pre-season testing at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia as three-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo struggled.

Stoner, 31, retired from racing in MotoGP at the end of 2012 before taking up a test and development role with Ducati last year, and featured on the opening day of testing at Sepang alongside full-time factory riders Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso.

Stoner turned in a fastest lap of 1:59.681 on Monday to lead the timesheets ahead of Dovizioso, who finished 0.115 seconds adrift on the Desmosedici GP17 bike.

Maverick Viñales was the best of the rest for Yamaha in third place, finishing six-tenths of a second clear of new team-mate Valentino Rossi in eighth. Álvaro Bautista was fourth on a satellite Ducati ahead of Suzuki's Andrea Iannone.

Monday marked Lorenzo's first official on-track appearance with Ducati in 2017, with the Spaniard failing to match the pace of his team-mates and ultimately finishing a lowly 17th.

Honda's charge was led by satellite rider Cal Crutchlow at Sepang, who finished sixth in the final standings. Factory riders Marc Márquez and Dani Pedrosa wound up ninth and 13th respectively on the RC213V bike.

Conditions remained dry for the first six hours of running before rain hit the circuit at 4pm local time, lasting until the chequered flag at 6pm.

Testing continues at Sepang on Tuesday, with running commencing at 1:45am GMT.
