Sir Stirling Moss is currently in a "stable" condition in a Singapore hospital following a "serious" chest infection, his family confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

The Briton, who despite winning 16 races during his Formula 1 career, never won a title and is therefore often considered the greatest driver never to have won a championship.

He and his wife were on holiday in Singapore during the Christmas period, but the 87-year-old was admitted to hospital on December 22. He is currently in a stable condition and in "good spirits" according to his family.

“Because of the severity of the infection it resulted in some complications and his recovery has not been as speedy as was expected or wished," the statement said.

“However, his condition continues to improve and his doctors now consider him to be stable," it added. "In himself, Sir Stirling is in good spirits and only upset about having missed his Christmas cruise with friends."

Once discharged, he plans to remain in Singapore for a few days of relaxation: "It is Sir Stirling and Lady Moss' hope to stay in Singapore to enjoy a few days recuperating at a lovely hotel, being thoroughly spoilt, whilst lying in the sun by a gorgeous swimming pool."
