Nico Rosberg has dedicated his first Formula 1 world championship to his wife and daughter, after second place secured the title for him in Abu Dhabi.
The German driver had to fend off Sebastian Vettel in the closing stages, after being backed into the chasing cars by team-mate and race winner Lewis Hamilton.
He ended up finishing in second place, which was good enough to take the championship and claim his maiden title in F1.
A clearly emotional Rosberg dedicated the win to his family on the podium, after becoming the second Rosberg to win a F1 title after his father Keke’s 1982 victory.
“That was definitely not the most enjoyable race I've ever had,” he explained. “With Max in the beginning and with those guys coming up the end, really not [that] enjoyable, those last laps.
“I'm glad it's over. Unbelievably ecstatic. I want to [dedicate] the win to my wife, thank you so much for all the support, and to our daughter. I will thank everyone else afterwards. Unreal.
“Very, very proud of course to have done the same feat as my dad achieved. He's going to be coming in like half an hour I think. Be exciting to see him.”
He also congratulated team-mate Hamilton on a close season: “I just want to say congrats to Lewis. You did a great season, great competitor, massively quick. Always tough to beat you.”
