Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo will start the final race of the 2016 MotoGP season from pole position after he smashed the Valencia lap record by six-tenths, to post a time of 1m29.401s, putting him three-tenths ahead of champion Marc Marquez.

The pair were the only riders to dip into the 1m29's as third-placed Valentino Rossi could only manage a 1m30.128s to claim the final front-row starting position for Yamaha.

The second row is headed up by Suzuki Ecstar's Maverick Vinales in fourth as he makes his final appearance for the team. Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and Yamaha Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro were fifth and sixth, both nine-tenths back.

Seventh went to Andrea Iannone as he continues to recover from a cracked vertebrae sustained in Misano, with Honda's Dani Pedrosa eighth as he too is recovering from an injury.

The top ten was completed by Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar), despite crashing out in the session, and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3).

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) will start P11 having crashed out, forcing him to sprint back to the pits to jump on his second bike.
