Sebastian Vettel ‘doesn’t deserve to be on the podium’ – Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo believes Sebastian Vettel shouldn't have been classified third in the Mexican Grand Prix and shouldn't therefore have been on the podium after a last-second change to the results.

The Ferrari driver was handed third after Ricciardo's Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen was handed a five-second time penalty, dropping him to fifth and elevating Vettel and Ricciardo a position each.

However during the race Ricciardo attempted to pass Vettel, only for the German to slam the door shut, which Ricciardo likened to "moving under braking" – a practice which has now been banned under new rules introduced at the last race.

"He did what everyone has been complaining about – moving under braking," explained the Australian.

"He's smiling now but for me he doesn't deserve to be on the podium. He kept on closing the door under braking and in the end I had nowhere to go."

Ricciardo was also critical of the stewards decision not to penalise race winner Lewis Hamilton who, at the start of the race, cut the first and second corners after locking a wheel.

"He deserved a penalty," added Ricciardo. "It was a mistake and you have to pay the price"
