Teams discuss adjustable rear-wing for 2011

Overtaking could become an easier task in 2011 as teams began discussing the possibility of an adjustable rear-wing.

Currently, the regulations permit an adjustable front-wing, however team bosses agreed to scrap this in 2011 during a meeting on Friday in Montreal because the benefits haven’t met expectations.

The Technical Working Group within FOTA favours the idea, which allows the drivers to adjust the wing by a maximum of 50mm, compared to just 6mm for the current front-wings.

The idea would only allow the chasing driver to adjust the wing, therefore giving them a speed advantage over the leading driver, much like the current F-duct on the McLaren car, by cutting drag on the straights.

A green light will show in the cockpit when a driver is within a specified distance (most likely around a second) of the car ahead, engaging the use of the wing.

To negate any advantage at the start of the race, the wing wouldn’t become active until the third lap, however, it could possibly be usable during re-starts after safety car periods.
