FIA clamps down on moving under braking in Formula 1

The FIA has announced it will clamp down on Formula 1 drivers moving under braking, ahead of this Sunday's United States Grand Prix.

Defensive driving became a hot topic after Max Verstappen’s battle with Lewis Hamilton at the end of the Japanese Grand Prix.

Mercedes initially protested the race result after Verstappen held off Hamilton to take second place but later dropped the complaint.

Verstappen’s racing in general has come under criticism from some driving but while he has not been awarded any penalties, the FIA is now prepared to punish a driver changing direction under braking.

The update in the FIA race notes said: "Article 27.5 of the sporting regulations states '…no car may be driven…in a manner which could be potentially dangerous to other drivers…'.

“Furthermore, article 27.8 prohibits any manoeuvre '…liable to hinder other drivers, such as…any abnormal change of direction'.

“With this in mind, and with the exception of any move permitted by Article 27.6, any change of direction under braking which results in another driver having to take evasive action will be considered abnormal and hence potentially dangerous to other drivers.

“Any such move will be reported to the stewards."
