Mercedes: Our drivers are ‘pushing each other to new heights’

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are pushing each other to "new heights" according to team boss Toto Wolff, as they both battle it out for the world championship, forcing them to reach new levels of performance to beat one another.

The pair are split by just eight points and although mathematically their rivals are still in with a chance of beating them to the title, it's an almost impossibility as neither Rosberg nor Hamilton have given an inch bar a first lap clash in Spain, which led to their only defeat of the season thus far.

Despite that rare error, the pair have never performed better according to Wollf.

"This year more than ever, we’ve seen that they are pushing each other to new heights," he said.

"We’re entering a gruelling phase of this record 21 race season, where the physical and mental challenge of a championship reaches its absolute peak. We’re in good shape – but we must remain on our toes to get the ball over the line."

Wolff hailed the Singapore battle between Rosberg and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo as "how F1 should be" and expects another tough time this weekend at a track they underperformed at in 2015.

"We saw Formula 1 at its best in Singapore. Just like in football, where you have good games and bad ones, this was a classic. I’m proud of the team for how we bounced back after last year and we take our hats off to Red Bull and Daniel [Ricciardo] too, as they made it a huge battle.

"This is how Formula 1 should be and, although it was extremely tense, I thoroughly enjoyed the race.

"Now we go to Malaysia, which is a big weekend for us. To win in what feels like our second home, in front of thousands of friends and partners from Petronas, would be very special. But, like Singapore, this was a race where we underperformed last year, so we will need to push hard to put that right. We can guarantee that the drivers will be doing just that."
