Jorge Lorenzo will start the San Marino round of the MotoGP championship from pole position after beating Yamaha team-mate and home favourite Valentino Rossi by more than three-tenths of a second.

Lorenzo's 1m31.868s was the first ever sub 1m32s time around the Riviera Di Rimini circuit as he secured his 64th pole – taking him one above Marc Marquez and Rossi in the record books.

The Yamaha pair start alongside Suzuki's Maverick Vinales on the front row of the grid with the Spaniard just over a tenth shy of Rossi's 1m32.216s P2 time.

The second row sees championship leader Marquez in fourth for Honda ahead of the Ducati pairing of Michele Pirro – in for an injured Andrea Iannone – and Andrea Dovizioso, fifth and sixth.
