Lewis Hamilton says he does not feel unbeatable, despite winning six of the last seven Grands Prix to open up a 19 point championship lead, having been 43 points behind at the start of his run.
After Hamilton won the German Grand Prix his Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff commented on Hamilton, "that guy has great talent and speed, and on a good day I think he's unbeatable". Hamilton however rejected the notion.
"I didn't know he said that" said Hamilton. "No I never feel invincible, or unbeatable either."
He did admit however that "I feel that when I'm at my strongest number one is where I can be".
Hamilton also reflected on the large championship points swing since the Spanish round in mid-May. "It's kind of crazy, it's gone by so quickly. It's almost like it was only a couple of weeks ago we were in Barcelona and I was 43 points behind and thinking jeez I might come away 50 points behind, and finding the heart to find my way through the woods…not giving up and just keep going and keep believing.
"I feel really happy with my performance today."
Earlier in the weekend Hamilton had stated that despite establishing a six-point lead in the title race he did not feel like the 'real' leader as he had an engine grid penalty imminent, likely to be served in Spa on Monza. And even today with his lead extending to 19 he insisted this remained the case. "[I] definitely feel different to being six points ahead…[but it's] still not enough, because I'm not a race win ahead yet."
Hamilton confirmed also that again he had been conserving his engine in today's race. "I turned down my engine pretty much from the second or third lap….when I needed to I was able to switch it back on and eke out the gap I needed.
"At the end I was trying to make that engine go as far as possible…you just don't know when it's going to go."
