Alex Lynn takes sprint race win as title fight intensifies behind

Alex Lynn took his second win of the season on Sunday with a win in the GP2 sprint race at Hockenheim Circuit.

The Brit took the lead at the start of the race as reverse-grid pole man Antonio Giovinazzi dropped to third, with Oliver Rowland occupying the gap in between.

Lynn kept the lead for the entirety of the race thereafter, troubled only by Oliver Rowland edging slightly closer to him during the first of the race's two Virtual Safety Car periods.

The VSC in question was triggerd by a coming together between Nabil Jeffri and Norrman Nato. The Frenchman attempted to pass at turn 8, but Jeffri was judged to have closed the door too soon, and the Racing Engineering driver hit the side of the Arden, taking Jeffri out of the race and dropping Nato to the back of the field.

As the Virtual Safety Car period ended, Lynn maintained his advantage, but behind him, Rowland's tyres began to fade. As he defended from Antonio Giovinazzi, the latter hit the back of him in an uncharacteristic error, losing part of his front wing and collecting a puncture that beached him in the gravel.

Sirotkin made plenty of places after winning Sunday's feature race to put himself in contention for a podium, and when then-third places Gystav Malja began losing grip, the Russian pounced and took third, before passing Rowland for second.

The positions swapped around many times in the last few laps, with Arthur Pic and Luca Ghiotto finding pace late on in the race to move forwards. The same could be said of Pierre Gasly, who after starting last due to a penalty in Saturday's race, found himslef in the points.

Rowland took victory ahead of Sirotkin, with Arthur Pic taking his first podium for Rapax in third. Then came Ghiotto, Rowland, Gasly, Raffaele Marciello, and in eighth place on the road was Artem Markelov. However, Markelov received a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. This gave Gustav Malja eighth place and the final point, but Markelov notched two points for the fastest lap.

The results put Sergey Sirotkin in the lead of the championship, a monumental achievement considering that the Russian was in eighth place coming into the weekend.
