Lewis Hamilton beats Nico Rosberg in controlled record fifth Hungarian GP victory

Lewis Hamilton secured a record fifth Hungarian Grand Prix victory, putting him one win ahead of Michael Schumacher, as he controlled the race from start to finish, having passed team-mate Nico Rosberg on the opening lap of the race.

The Mercedes driver never pulled away from Rosberg by more than a handful of seconds during the race, but it was enough to ensure he remained in the lead and crossed the line first to take over the lead of the championship for the first time this season.

Hamilton claimed the lead off the start as he got a great start, though it looked like Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo would get past both Mercedes cars at Turn 1, before narrowly coming out behind the Briton, but ahead of Rosberg. However Rosberg quickly got past again at Turn 2 and the order settled down from there.

Ricciardo went on to finish third having come under pressure from fourth-placed Sebastian Vettel on the final laps, but held the Ferrari driver off.

It was a similar story for Max Verstappen in fifth as he too defended against a charging Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn came through from P14 to finish sixth.

The less than dramatic race saw just one retirement in the form of Jenson Button. The McLaren driver suffered a loss of hydraulic pressure and dropped to the back of the field before serving a drive-through penalty as his team assisted him over the radio.

Although he got going again and climbed up to P18, he retired several laps from the end. His team-mate Fernando Alonso was seventh to claim a further six points.

Completing the top ten were Carlos Sainz – equaling his best result – Valtteri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg.
