Mercedes dominates as Lewis Hamilton leads opening practice in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes 1-2 in first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix as the pair dominated the session with a more than 1.5 second gap to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in third.

Hamilton's 1:21.347 was seven-tenths quicker than last year's pole position time, with the resurfaced track delivering quicker times already. Expect them to tumble much further come qualifying on Saturday.

Team-mate Nico Rosberg – who has just signed a new Mercedes contract – was two-tenths adrift of Hamilton in second, with the two Ferraris emerging "best of the rest" behind.

Vettel was third ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, with less than a tenth splitting them.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was fifth ahead of Max Verstappen. The pair some way off the pace and just a couple of tenths quicker than the McLaren cars in seventh and eighth, led by Fernando Alonso.

However, both Red Bull and McLaren opted not to use the Supersoft tyre, unlike Mercedes and Ferrari, and therefore likely have a little more pace to show.

Haas' Romain Grosjean and Force India's Sergio Perez completed the top ten.

The session began in damp conditions with very little action for the opening 20 minutes, bar some installation laps.

The new surface, although quicker, proved a little slippy in places as Alonso span at the final corner, followed by Vettel at Turn 12 and then Charles Leclerc at Turn 6.

Alonso would go off a second time, though this time at Turn 5, before team-mate Button went off at Turn 8. All were able to continue unhindered.
