Lewis Hamilton wins at home as Nico Rosberg gets demoted to third

Lewis Hamilton drove a controlled race to claim his fourth victory of the 2016 season and his third consecutive British Grand Prix win in difficult conditions, to become the most successful British driver at Silverstone.

The Briton led from start to finish to cross the line seven seconds ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg in second, however the second Mercedes is under investigation after the team gave him instructions over team radio, which are now illegal under new rules.

Should Rosberg receive a penalty, Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who finished third, could find himself in second place.

The race began under a Safety Car following a heavy downpour before the start of the race and remained under the control of Bernd Maylander for five laps, before conditions improved enough for Hamilton to take over.

The tricky conditions caught several drivers out, with the majority stopping for intermediate tyres almost immediately.

Turn 1 proved the most difficult with almost every driver having an off at some point in the remaining 46 laps, including race winner Hamilton.

Verstappen quickly seized second from Rosberg as he made the most of Red Bull's pace in the wet and held that position through the first stops. However Rosberg managed to reel the Dutchman in as the track dried to retake the place.

In the closing stages however, Rosberg reported a gearbox issue and the team informed him to skip seventh gear and to change settings – something which is banned under new rules.

Daniel Ricciardo claimed fourth, 17 seconds adrift, with Kimi Raikkonen fifth after a late pass on Force India's Sergio Perez, despite several errors from the Finn costing him a lot of time.

Perez had to settle for sixth ahead of his team-mate and Carlos Sainz, eighth, whilst Sebastian Vettel could only climb to ninth having started P11. The German also running wide on several occasions as he struggled for grip in the tricky conditions.

Vettel took a five-second penalty for forcing Felipe Massa off track, which dropped him behind Sainz in the results.

Fernando Alonso finished behind his team-mate after spinning off into the gravel at Abbey, but managed to recover.

Update: Rosberg demoted to third following investigation into team radio breach (Result below reflects change).
