Pirelli to begin testing wider 2017 tyres with Ferrari next month

Pirelli has confirmed the dates for its 2017 testing programme, which will see it undertake 24 days of on-track testing to develop its new wider tyres for next season.

Formula 1's sole tyre supplier will conduct its first test with a modified 2015 Ferrari chassis at Fiorano on August 1-2, running intermediate and full wet tyres. The circuit will be artifically "dampened" to allow full analysis of the new tyres.

That test will be followed by a slick tyre test on August 3-4 with a modified 2015 Red Bull chassis.

Mercedes will also supply a modified 2015 car for testing purposes, with it set to take to the Paul Ricard circuit in September for a slick tyre test.

According to Pirelli, the three cars will be modified to a "precise specification established by the FIA that simulates the performance anticipated for next year, principally including more downforce, a wider track and bigger tyres".

All three teams will be obliged to share any tyre data with rival outfits for reasons of "sporting equity".

The development programme was agreed by the FIA as part of Pirelli's new contract, with the Italian supplier insisting if it is to deliver quicker and more durable tyres in 2017, it would require significant testing opportunities.

The new tyres will increase in size by 60mm at the front and 80mm at the rear. In total, they will be 25% wider than the current specification.

The ten test sessions will be capped off with a three-car test to in Abu Dhabi on November 29 to validate the results.
