Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso will start the Dutch MotoGP race from the front after securing a dramatic pole position around the Assen TT track in damp conditions.

The session began under damp conditions and although they began to dry come Q2, the majority of riders stuck with the full-wet tyres as patches of water were still visible in places.

Dovizioso took a dominant pole, mastering the conditions to go more than seven-tenths quicker than Yamaha's Valentino Rossi. The Italian will start second alongside Pramac's Scott Redding, the Briton securing his first ever front-row start.

Championship leader Marc Marquez qualified in fourth place, more than a second down on pole, but crucially several places ahead of nearest rival Jorge Lorenzo in tenth – promoted a position thanks to Andrea Iannone's penalty.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), Yonny Hernandez (Aspar), Pol Espargaro (Yamaha Tech3), Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki Ecstar) and Danilo Petrucci (Pramac) complete the top ten.

The session saw multiple riders fall, including Maverick Vinales early on. During a low speed corner he lost his bike and had to sprint back to the pits.

Marquez crashed on his outlap, but managed to commandeer a photographer's scooter to get back to the pits and jump on the second bike, allowing him to return to the action with minutes to spare.
