Sergey Sirotkin takes second GP2 pole in Monaco

Sergey Sirotkin will start Friday's GP2 feature race in Monaco from pole position after topping the timesheets in qualifying on Thursday evening.

Sirotkin produced a stunning lap at the very end of the session for the second group after a red flag delay following a shunt for Artem Markelov.

The Russian driver bounced over the kerb at Sainte Devote before slamming into the armco, freezing the timer with three minutes remaining.

After a long delay, the session ultimately restarted to give the drivers one final chance to improve their lap times, allowing provisional leader Sirotkin to find another half a second to secure his second pole position in GP2 and his first for ART Grand Prix.

Sirotkin's lap of 1m19.186s was enough to beat Racing Engineering's Jordan King, who finished half a second back after a scruffy final lap.

Norman Nato had topped the first group, with his lap of 1m19.894 being enough for second on the grid by virtue of the split qualifying rules.

Despite going faster than Nato, King was left to settle for P3 on the grid ahead of Mitch Evans and Oliver Rowland, all of whom featured in the mix for pole position across the course qualifying.

Spain sprint race winner Alex Lynn qualified sixth ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi and Raffaele Marciello, while Nicholas Latifi and Luca Ghiotto round out the top 10 on the grid.

Championship leader Pierre Gasly could only finish P8 in group one, translating to 16th place on the grid, but he is under investigation for failing to go to the weighbridge when requested during qualifying. Sergio Canamasas was also deemed to have made a similar misdemeanour, warranting another investigation.
