Jorge Lorenzo beat Marc Marquez by just 0.019 seconds at the Italian Grand Prix, as polesitter Valentino Rossi retired with engine failure.
Lorenzo jumped from fifth to first at the start of the race, with the two Yamaha riders battling closely at the front of the field.
However, on home soil, Rossi’s challenge came to an end when he suffered an engine failure, with white smoke pouring from the back of his bike.
Marquez remained close to the lead fight and moved up to second place due to Rossi’s retirement. He passed Lorenzo and took the lead mid-way through the race at Turn 4.
The Honda rider was able to eke out a small advantage but he came under pressure from Lorenzo in the closing stages.
The two went head-to-head on the run to the chequered flag, with Lorenzo using the slipstream to just beat Marquez to victory. Andrea Iannone bounced back from a tough first lap to complete the podium.
Dani Pedrosa was fourth for Honda, with Andrea Dovizioso in the second Ducati running wide at Turn 1 late on and falling to fifth.
A poor start saw Maverick Vinales drop down the order from the front row but he recovered to sixth, ahead of Bradley Smith and Danilo Petricci. Aleix Espargaro and Michele Pirro completed the top 10.
