The No. 15 car of Graham Rahal and the No. 21 IndyCar machine of Josef Newgarden have been sent to the back of the grid for the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
Newgarden originally qualified in fourth place, with Rahal in fifth, after both made it through to the Fast Six on Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
But the two cars failed post-qualifying technical inspections, after “violation of Rule 14.3.1.1 of the Verizon IndyCar Series Rule Book for minimum car weight”.
Indycars must weight a minimum of 1,610 pounds on road and street courses, as well as short ovals, and this includes all lubricants, coolants, camera and dummy camara housings.
Rahal and Newgarden’s cars both failed to meet that requirement and will start from the back of the field, based on the entrant points entering the event.
It will be Rahal starting 24th and Newgarden starting 25th at the back of the pack for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Simon Pagenaud starts from pole position for Penske.
