Nico Rosberg made it seven consecutive race wins and his fourth of the 2016 season as he took an unchallenged victory in Russia, finishing 23 seconds ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg got a strong start to lead the Williams of Valtteri Bottas into Turn 1, but drama behind brought out the Safety Car as the Red Bull of Daniil Kyat made contact with the rear of Sebastian Vettel.

Kyat and Vettel were both able to continue, but further contact between the pair seconds later saw the Ferrari driver spin off into the barriers, whilst Kyat escaped undamaged – though the Russian was later handed a ten-second stop/go penalty.

Lewis Hamilton finished the race second despite starting tenth, making up five places on the first lap alone. The Briton carved his way through the field with a brave move on both Kimi Raikkonen and Bottas to begin chasing down Rosberg.

A 12-second gap eventually closed to just seven, before Hamilton was forced to back off with a water pressure issue.

Raikkonen was third – taking Ferrari’s 700th podium – finishing 17 seconds ahead of Bottas, whilst the second Williams of Felipe Massa completed the top five positions.

McLaren enjoyed its best race of the season after a double points finish. Fernando Alonso's sixth place just one less than he managed in Hungary last year. Jenson Button meanwhile finished tenth to take the final point.

Renault scored its first point of the season – and of its return – as Kevin Magnussen held on to seventh, finishing ahead of the Haas of Romain Grosjean, eighth, and Sergio Perez.

The first cornern carnage also caught out Nico Hulkenberg who retired on lap one with damage caused by contact with Esteban Gutierrez, 17th.
