Marc Marquez quickest again despite second practice crash

Honda's Marc Marquez once again topped the timing screens for the second Austin practice session with a dominant seven-tenth gap to second-placed Andrea Iannone.

The session saw a flurry of activity as soon as the session went green, with almost the entire grid heading out on-track. That didn't however include 0,0 Marc VDS rider Jack Miller who crashed during FP1 and took his time before getting on his bike to take part in the second session.

It took several laps before Marquez headed the timing screens, but once he ramped up the pace he immediately dipped below the 2m04s mark before going even quicker on his next lap – well, he would of had he not fell at Turn 20. The Spaniard looked set for a 2m03s laptime before the tumble.

He quickly recovered, pushing his bike back to the pits, before getting going again and improving just a few laps later to post an astonishing 2m04.034 on his 11th attempt.

Like FP1, three different manufacturers held the top three positions with Ducati's Iannone second ahead of Suzuki's Maverick Vinales, eight-tenths down on Marquez.

Fourth place saw Scott Redding finish as the highest placed Independent rider. Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo completed the top five riders.

Valentino Rossi (Yamaha), Loris Baz (Avintia), Dani Pedrosa (Honda), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) formed the top ten which was tighter than initial glances at the timesheets may suggest. A second split Iannone in second from Yonny Hernandez (Aspar) in 15th.

Along with Marquez, Eugene Laverty suffered a fast fall at Turn 2 towards the end of the session. The Irishman lucky to escape injury at the rapid corner.
