Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez will start Sunday’s MotoGP race in Argentina from pole position, despite a late fall in qualifying.
The Spaniard put in a 1m39.411s during Q2 to secure first place on the grid, before crashing at Turn 1 in the closing stages of the session.
He was able to walk away from his damaged bike and ended the session four tenths clear of his nearest rival. Marquez topped a disrupted FP4 earlier in the day, which was stopped twice due to a tyre issue for Scott Redding.
Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will complete the front row of the grid after finishing Q2 in second and third. Dani Pedrosa will line up fourth, ahead of Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone.
Maverick Vinales was seventh on his Suzuka. Hector Barbera, Cal Crutchlow and Pol Espargaro completed the top 10. His brother Aleix was 11th, with Bradley Smith 12th after a crash at the first corner.
Loris Baz will start 13th, having been the fastest rider to not make it through to the second session from Q1. Redding, Jack Miller, Stefan Bradl and Eugene Lavery are next up.
Michele Pirro missed Friday’s running but will start 18th, with Tito Rabat, Alvaro Bautista and Yonny Hernandez completing the grid.
