Andretti Autosport has announced that veteran racer Townsend Bell will race in its fifth and final entry at this year's Indianapolis 500.
Bell, 41, made his first appearance at the Indy 500 in 2006, and has since taken part in eight further runnings with a best finish of fourth in 2009 with KV Racing Technology.
Andretti announced ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix of Phoenix that Bell would be racing alongside its full-season line-up of Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti, Carlos Munoz and Alexander Rossi at the 100th running of the prestigious race on May 29.
"We’re really pleased to be able to field a fifth entry for Townsend,” team owner Marco Andretti said. "Even though he is not in the car full time, Townsend has proven he can quickly get up to speed – he’s shown it’s possible to compete once a year and be competitive. We see a lot of promise in his ability and are looking forward to having five cars challenging for a win at the 100th running this May."
Bell was thankful for the chance to race in his ninth consecutive Indy 500 in what will arguably be his strongest entry yet.
“Driving in the 100th Running of the Indy 500 with Andretti Autosport is a great opportunity. I think I’ll benefit from being part of a strong, multi-car team with a winning pedigree at Indy," Bell said.
"This is my ninth consecutive start and I’m glad it’s all come together the way it has – I'm looking forward to working with Honda again and having the chance to race for one of the best teams in the sport."
