Conor Daly has expressed disappointment with his qualifying result for the IndyCar Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, where the American rookie could only manage to qualify 21st for the race.
This result means Daly will start the 110-lap from the back row of the grid, alongside fellow rookie Spencer Pigot.
Despite the poor qualifying result, Daly has shown brief spells of competitiveness throughout the weekend and is remaining optimistic ahead of the race.
"I'm disappointed for sure. You're never, ever happy in the back,” explained a disheartened Daly after qualifying.
“We have quite a bit to do but we've done a lot, we've investigated a lot, we've tried a lot, so no matter what it will help going down the road for the season.”
Throughout both final practice and qualifying, Daly found himself stuck behind traffic on numerous occasions.
Despite feeling frustrated, Daly understands that the nature of the St. Petersburg street course will lead to drivers getting impeded throughout the weekend.
“I also got impeded by traffic, sadly, but that's part of the game,” continued Daly.
“If you go through a weekend without, at one point, getting traffic you won the lottery so, no blame there, it's just part of their game and we just have to put ourselves in a better position next time.
“We'll see what happens in the race.”
Despite being officially regarded as a rookie this season, the 110-lap Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will actually be Daly’s seventh start in IndyCar.
