Pirelli confirms tyre nominations for Canadian Grand Prix

Formula 1’s tyre supplier Pirelli has announced the nominations for the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where the new ultra soft compound will be used.

Pirelli had previously confirmed the choices for the first four rounds, up until the Russian Grand Prix. 2016 regulations mean nominations for fly-away races have to be made 14 weeks in advance, compared to the eight-week deadline for European rounds.

The purple-marked ultra soft, red-banded super-soft and yellow soft compounds will be used over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, the seventh round of the season.

The mandatory tyres available for the race are two sets of the soft compound, with at least one of them being used. The ultra soft tyre, new for 2016, has been assigned for qualifying.

One set must be saved by each driver for Q3 of the softest nominated tyre. This will then be given back to Pirelli after the session.

Due to the rule changes for this season, teams are free to choose the remaining sets of tyres, with 13 available in total.

Pirelli also confirmed on Twitter that the ultra soft, which will be used in Montreal, will debut at the Monaco Grand Prix.
