McLaren working weekends to catch up – Dennis

McLaren chairman Ron Dennis says his team are working “night and day” as well as weekends to close the gap to their rivals next year, following a tough 2015 season.

The Woking-based team reunited with both Honda and Fernando Alonso this year, with many expecting the partnership to produce promising results. However the team scored just 27 points, failed to get on the podium and suffered horrendous reliability.

Dennis insists they are doing everything they can to get back on top, including working round the clock, though he suggested the problems were almost exclusively down to engine supplier Honda.

“We know what we’ve got to do to turn things around, and, as I speak, we’re working night and day to do just that,” he told the official Formula 1 website.

“Put it this way: if you visit the McLaren Technology Centre on a Saturday or a Sunday this winter, you won’t find many free car parking spaces!

“Our chassis is a very good one – all the data bears that out. Our driver line-up is the best in the sport – the stats prove that.

“Our partnership with Honda is a new one, or a freshly renewed one to be precise, and it’s not remotely surprising that it should be taking a little while to gel. That’s what Formula One is like, and it always has been.”
