‘Renault one of our better options now’ – Ricciardo

Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo has admitted Renault is “one of the better options” on the table as his team searches for a power unit supplier for 2016.

The championship winning Red Bull team terminated its agreement with the French manufacturer a year early as it sought a deal with Ferrari or Mercedes.

However with both companies refusing to supply a key rival, Red Bull has been forced to renegotiate with Renault in a bid to continue using its engines next year.

When asked if it wasn’t something Ricciardo would support, he said: “Obviously I want to be racing next year, I want a seat, I want to be on the grid.

“But if someone said we’re going to be racing but we’re going to be 16th, then maybe I don’t want to be racing.”

However the Australian believes it could be the best option available to them, particularly if Renault can make some gains over the winter.

“If they can prepare something better than we’ve had this year and it gives us a chance to fight further up the grid, then yeah, it’s one of our better options for now.

“Let’s see. We can’t rule out anything, but we do want something competitive.

“Just to run around and make up numbers is not what we’re about, and as a driver I’m not really interested in that.”
