The Australian Grand Prix will remain in the city of Melbourne until 2023, according to Victorian premier Daniel Andrews, who made the announcement on Facebook.

New South Wales premier, Mike Baird, is campaigning to bring the race to Sydney, but in response, Andrews posted a video on Facebook to announce that Melbourne has a contract to host the race for the next eight years.

“The Australian Grand Prix brings tens of thousands of visitors to Victoria and creates so many local jobs that Sydney tried to steal it,” he wrote alongside the video.

“Victorians – the Grand Prix’s here to stay. We’ve just locked in Melbourne’s race until at least 2023,” he confirmed.

“I’m sorry Mike, but the Grand Prix is here to stay exactly where it belongs, in the great city of Melbourne.

“The good news is that you and tens of thousands of others from New South Wales and right across Australia, and indeed right across the world, are more than welcome to come to Melbourne to be part of the great race.

“In fact I’ll even shout you a ticket.”
