Vergne and Gutierrez ‘a possibility’ for Haas drive

Ferrari reserve drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and Esteban Gutierrez are possible candidates to secure a seat with the Haas F1 Team in 2016, team owner Gene Haas has confirmed.

The pair both have at least two years of F1 racing experience, which fits team boss Gunther Steiner’s request for drivers which “already know what they’re doing.”

Whilst Haas admitted they’re “possible candidates” given their links to Ferrari, which has a technical partnership with Haas, he says the candidate list will likely grow as the driver market becomes clearer.

“We have a list of drivers in which we are interested in, but in the next few months there will be many moves in the [existing] teams’ lineups and we will wait to see who is interested in the project we are developing,” he said.

“Two of them are reserve drivers from Ferrari, so they are certainly a possibility.”

When Nico Hulkenberg’s name was mentioned as a possibility alongside Vergne and Gutierrez, Haas replied: “He is a driver from another team, so the possibility of him driving for us depends on his position with his team.

“Anybody who is driving in a Formula 1 team right now, certainly, is someone that we would be interested in, if they become available.”
