Hamilton apologises to his team for ‘worst race’

Lewis Hamilton has apologised to his team for what he’s described as his “worst race”, after a string of errors cost him a shot at victory in Hungary.

The Briton lost the lead at the start and dropped to fourth behind the Ferraris and team-mate Nico Rosberg before running off track and through the gravel, leaving him 11th.

Whilst he fought his way back to fourth, contact with Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull pushed him back further and then a penalty for the contact dropped him out of the points once again.

Despite the problems, all of which he took responsibility for, he finished sixth and increased his lead in the championship.

“What a day, that was a hard afternoon,” he said after the race. “I definitely had a bad day at the office.

“It was one of the worst races I think I’ve had, and all I can do is apologise to the team and work hard to make amends at the next race.

“A day like today, when you make mistakes and it affects the team, it hurts.”

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff described it as a “nightmare”, but said it was due to happen sooner or later after a relatively error free season.

“For us, it was incident packed. We had more incidents in this one race than we did throughout the season.

“We knew that day would come, and it was today. It was a nightmare for all of us.”
