Chilton surprised by how long Manor have survived

Former Marussia driver Max Chilton says he’s surprised that the revived Manor-Marussia outfit is still surviving after it collapsed before the 2014 season had concluded.

The Briton, who now races for Nissan in the World Endurance Championship and is currently competing in Le Mans, drove for Marussia for two seasons but ended his relationship with the team last year and was therefore unaware of their efforts to return.

“I wasn’t surprised [by their return], but I’m surprised how long they’ve lasted,” he told F1i. “I will still wait to see how long that will last.

“It was a bit of a shock but that was because we weren’t talking to them so I didn’t have a clue where they were positioned.”

Chilton added that the team did well to get everything ready for the first race in Australia considering the position they were in just two weeks before.

“They did well to turn it around or at least get things together because I did see [team boss] John [Booth] at Silverstone in February, two weeks before Australia.

“Nismo [Nissan’s LMP1 project] are based in the same building at Silverstone and they were organising things which you can’t believe they were still organising! But they got there to be fair.”
